RHAPSODY OF FIRE – Intervista ad ALEX STAROPOLI (09.02.2016, Live at Rock On)

Ciao Alex. Benvenuto a ROCK ON!

Nonostante la Vostra popolarità abbia raggiunto, da tempo, livelli mondiali avete suonato, finalmente, nella vostra propria città (Trieste), solo recentemente…
AS : Finalmente ce l’abbiamo fatta! E non solo! Abbiamo aperto pure per gli Scorpions, e se vale il detto “non c’è due senza tre”, magari qualche altro concertone in futuro salterà fuori.

Il nostro sindaco vi ha già consegnato le chiavi della città o non ancora?
AS: Ahaha…non ancora, a breve…

Anche se Trieste è piccola e ci conosciamo un po’ tutti, voi avete sempre cercato di evitare di suonare in posti piccoli, nei baretti, per cui all’inizio anche se all’estero eravate già stra-famosi, qui non eravate così tanto noti
AS: Ti sbagli. All’inizio abbiamo anche suonato alla Sagra della Birra in Carso ed in un ristorante a Muggia (piccole province di Trieste ndr),poi ci siamo spostati verso la Germania e da lì è nato tutto… 

Ricordo bene quegli anni, la vostra evoluzione, la scalata verso il vostro clamoroso successo. Come sta procedendo tra l’altro?
AS: Ottimamente! Siamo appena tornati dai Caraibi, con sosta in Giamaica.
Siamo stati al mitico 70,000 tons of Metal, dove abbiamo fatto due concerti sulla nave da crociera ed un “SoldOut” show, da 2500 persone, a città del Messico. E’ stata una bella iniezione d’energia, sia per noi personalmente, sia per la band, grazie agli incredibili fans che abbiamo incontrato, provenienti dal Sud America e da un po’ tutte le parti del mondo.
I Messicani sono veramente dei pazzi!

E tra un paio di settimane sarete nuovamente in partenza…
AS: Sì! Ai primi di Marzo saremo in Asia, Taiwan, Giakarta, indonesia e per due date in Giappone. In Indonesia sarà la nostra primissima volta, tra l’altro ho visto proprio oggi le foto ed il booklet, con il quale la FM Records ha fatto pubblicare il nostro disco anche là. Ufficialmente siamo distribuiti anche in Indonesia! Inoltre il promoter dello show è gasatissimo, sta postando annunci, poster, foto dapertutto…Siamo molto curiosi e non vediamo l’ora di esser laggiù!

Parliamo del Vostro nuovo Album? E’ uscito recentemente?
AS: Ufficialmente “Into The Legend” è uscito non molto tempo fa, in date differenti a seconda dei vari mercati, in Europa, America, o quello asiatico. E’ fresco fresco d’uscita. Diciamo che non ha ancora un mese di vita, ma ci sta già dando ottimi risultati, e stiamo ricevendo ottime recensioni al riguardo.

Scusami, nella fretta prima vi ho nominati semplicemente “Rhapsody” di cui tu sei stato il co-fondatore. Sappiamo benissimo della vostra scissione, Luca Turilli da una parte e voi con i Rhapsody of Fire. Se possiamo toccare l’argomento. Come sono le relazioni tra di Voi?
AS: Sì, sì possiamo parlarne liberamente. A livello di amicizia non è cambiato nulla, Ci conosciamo da quando eravamo veramente giovani. Luca aveva sedici anni, io diciasette. Eravamo e siamo ancora adesso, tanti anni dopo, come dei fratelli.
Ci siamo separati più che altro per motivi “lavorativi”, nel tentativo di fare qualcosa di diverso ed autonomamente. Ascoltando attentamente i nostri reciproci lavori, puoi capire chiaramente quanto i nostri gusti ora si differenzino, e quanto diverse siano le direzioni musicali che abbiamo intrapreso. Con i Rhapsody of Fire, con “Into The Legend” siamo andati in una direzione del tutto differente da quella di Luca Turilli con il suo ultimo lavoro.  

Ultimamente la tua band ha aggiunto anche altri componenti provenienti da un’altra band storica della nostra città, i Sinestesia. Come mai? Hai voluto dare un tocco di “triestinità” al tuo progetto?
AS: Ah ah triestinità, nel senso buono del termine. All’inizio Roby De Micheli (il chitarrista ndr), io e Luca suonavamo assieme. Roby andava addirittura in classe assieme a Luca Turilli. Ci frequentavamo, ascoltavamo la stessa musica, avevamo le stesse abitudini. Per cui, alla fine la scelta di assoldare Roby nella nostra band è stata quella più ovvia e scontata. Lo stesso discorso vale anche per Alessandro (Sala, il nuovo bassista ndr) che è bravissimo, oltre che simpatico. Volevo una persona di Trieste, con la quale potermi relazionare facilmente. Per ora ci troviamo benissimo e speriamo di continuare così.

Com’è stato, per te e per loro, il poter aprire per gli Scorpions, nella vostra propria città?
AS: Noi l’avevamo buttata lì agli Scorpions:”Dai, siamo di Trieste…perchè non ci fate suonare con voi…”
Poi loro ci hanno offerto di aprire anche a Roma. Avremmo potuto suonare pure a Milano perchè ai Gamma Ray gli si era guastato il Tour Bus. Ma a quel punto era divenuto ormai troppo tardi. E’ stato bello suonare per migliaia di fans. Inoltre il Palazzo dello Sport di Trieste è praticamente dietro a casa mia, per cui la cosa, almeno per me, è stata veramente incredibile.

Ok, tu sei ormai navigato, ma come hanno retto l’emozione i “nuovi”
AS: Noi dal vivo siamo delle macchine. Siamo seri, non c’è spazio per “menate”. Andiamo sul palco con un’attitudine molto seria, anche se alla fine ci divertiamo, giochiamo e suoniamo. In realtà non abbiamo avvertito alcun emozione particolare o perlomeno, non ci siamo posti alcuna paranoia.

Tra le tante leggende che giravano nella nostra piccola città c’è quella che Midnight, lo storico cantante dei Crimson Glory, ahimè, prima di morire, sia venuto proprio qui a Trieste. Ne sai qualcosa?
AS: E’ verissimo. Inizialmente io e Luca Turilli eravamo stati in Florida per conoscere Midnight e perchè volevamo coinvolgerlo in un progetto che avevamo in mente. Lui purtroppo beveva parecchio in quel periodo per cui decidemmo di abbandonare l’idea. Poi dopo qualche anno io e mio fratello Manuel tornammo negli States e lo ritrovammo completamente cambiato. Più tranquillo e “pulito”.
Lui al di fuori dei Crimson Glory e dei suoi lavori da solista, non aveva mai collaborato con nessun altro. Si era detto contento della nostra iniziativa e a Natale del 2008 venne qui a Trieste. Doveva inizialmente stare qui una ventina di giorni, ma poi, alla fine, ha soggiornato a casa mia per quasi due mesi. In quel periodo, lui scriveva testi, componeva, lavoravamo assieme a questo progetto musicale.
Ricordo che durante il periodo di Natale era contentissimo, perchè si sentiva nuovamente “in famiglia” (visto che la sua in America l’aveva praticamente abbandonato) in mezzo ai miei genitori, mio fratello, i nipoti…
E’ stata una cosa veramente particolare, molto intensa ed emozionale. Mi vengono ancora i brividi a ricordare quello che lui mi cantava, i testi che riusciva a comporre. Dopo questi due mesi veramente intensi lui se ne tornò in Florida. Eravamo d’accordo che ci saremmo ritrovati a breve, in studio a registrare, ed invece, purtroppo è venuto a mancare.  

Hai tempo per ascoltare altra musica? Quali bands e che musica ascolti solitamente?
AS: Ultimamente  sto ascoltando solo una band: gli Alter Bridge!

Ok Alex, grazie del tempo che ci hai concesso. Visto che abiti molto vicino agli studi di Radio City Trieste ti aspettiamo qui, magari per una serata interamente dedicata ai “Rhapsody of Fire”!

RHAPSODY OF FIRE – ALEX STAROPOLI Interview  (09.02.2016)

Ciao Alex. Welcome to ROCK ON!
Despite you’re very famous and play concerts everywhere on the world, you, only recently, suceeded to perform in your home town.
AS: Yeah. Finally we made it! And after that we also opened for Scorpions. As we said in Italy: After the 2nd there’ll be surely a 3rd time! So maybe in future, there will be some other big events.

Did our Major already gift you some awards? Like the keys for the town hall?
AS: (laughing): Not yet. Soon …

When your worlwide popularity rised up you still were not so famous in Triest and neither in Italy. How come? Maybe because you didn’t so oftenly play in small venues, bars, etc. in the city?
AS: No, you’re wrong. When the band had just began, we did perform in a restaurant in Muggia, we played at beer fairs and in some villages. Than we toured Germany – and this is where it all began.

I well remember those years, after your tour in Germany and in Europe, your success raised so fast! How is it going, now?
AS: Excellent! We just came back from Caraibi, we exihibited at prestiogious “70,000 tons of Metal” Festival, and not only played concerts on board of this cruise ship;  we made one soldout show with 2500 guests in Mexico City too! 
We recharged our batteries with a lot of positive energy. Thanks to all the fans who came from South America and all over the world to see us.
Mexicans are really crazy!

In few weeks you’ll depart again…
AS: Yeah. In early March we’ll travel to Asia, Taiwan, Djakarta and Indonesia. We’ll also have two shows in Japan. We will play for the first time in Indonesia. Our record company (FM) showed me photos and also the booklet of our new album today. Officially we are distributed in Indonesia too. The promoter down there is so excited! He puts messages, posters, events and photos online. Everywhere. We’re very curious and can not wait to finally perform there.

Let’s talk about your new album “Into The Legend”. When has it been released, officially?
AS: There were different dates for the European, the US and Asian markets. So it has been released at several dates indeed. In any case the new baby isn’t older than a month.

You were the co-founder of the original “Rhapsody“. Then after the famous “scism”, we had “Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody” and yours “Rhapsody of Fire”. Can we talk about the relationship of your and his band?
AS: Yeah we can talk about it, without any problem. Our friendship is still solid and never changed. We know each others for ages and were pretty young when we had founded “Rhapsody“ together. Luca was 16 years old, I was one year older. We still are brothers. We decided to separate for artistic reasons only, we both wanted to try different things. And today you can easily find the differences between our styles. If you listen to our albums you realize immediately that we have different tastes and different goals. With “Into The Legend” we’re going to a completely different artistic direction than Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody.

New members who recently joined your band are also from Trieste. How come?
AS: Long time ago, Roby DeMicheli (guitar), Luca Turilli and me, we were in a sort of school mates band. We were listening to the same kind of music, had similar habitudes. Roby and Luca were also in the same class. So at the end, it was a naturally consequence that Roby joined my band. Later on, even Alessandro (Sala, their new bass player) did the same. He’s great. As a human being and as a musician. I needed a person from Trieste, living in my same city. Everything is easier and, till now, is perfect. We hope it will be the same in future too.

How did it feel to be the support act of the Scorpions here in Trieste, in your city?
AS: We have had this amazing opportunity, then they offered us to perform in Rome too. And we also would have done it in Milan,  as Gammy Ray had some technical problems with their TourBus. But it was too late for us. It was so great to play in front of thousands of fans. Considering that the venue in Trieste is in walking distance to my house, what happened it is still something “more than unbelieveable” in my eyes!

Ok, we know, you’re a well experienced musician. How were the new band members doing and reacting during such amazing experience?
AS: Our band is strong. On stage our attitude is very professional and serious even if, of course, we had fun while we play. None of us felt a particular emotion or had any particular problem.

There is this myth that Midnight, the famous Crimson Glory vocalist, visited our city before he died. Do you know if this legend is true?
AS: It’s absolute true! Long time ago Luca Turilli and me went to Florida to get to know him and to ask him to participate at a project. Unfortunately those days, Midnight had some problems with alcohol abuse. Luca and me than decided to skip the plan. A few years later my brother Manuel and me visited Florida and Midnight was sober and clean. Apart from his time with Cirmson Glory and his solo career he never had done anything else. So he agreed to join our project. Consequently He came to Trieste in december 2008. It has been planned that he would stay a couple of weeks only. At the end he spent almost two months in my house. He was happy here, He wrote lyrics, worked a lot, composed music. Actually he was more than happy as he finally felt like being part of a family again. In the United States he didn’t have a family anymore. Midnight spent his X-Mas holidays with me, my parents and my brother. It was a really intense and particular experience for all of us. I still have shivers remembering that period we lived together. What he sung for me, the music he wrote. After these two unbelievable months he went back to Florida. We agreed to meet again in a recording studio, but, sadly…he died.

Do you have time to listen to music? And if so, from which band?
AS: Lately I’m listening only to one band: Alter Bridge!
